Chapter VI

The Red Era

Bread but No Butter

Summary

The Soviet dictatorship navigated between real or imaginary foes during its relatively short history (1917–91). The six stages of Soviet evolution were:

War Communism. A moneyless-barter economy existed, the Red Terror was unleashed, and the Communist International was organized to foment world revolution.

The New Economic Policy made concessions to hard-pressed peasants and legalized small traders.

Stalin’s farm collectivization and military industrialization programs were to overcome a 50 to 100-year lag of economic development. The Great Terror and westward expansion drove to 10 million the number of State victims since 1932.
